Group Programs

For the longest time, I was only ever able to offer one-on-one lessons to my students.  Whether you traveled to me in Raritan, or I traveled to you… wherever… it has always been a pretty solitary and individual thing.  Which is really pretty great for most people.

But now, I have the opportunity to work in one location in Perth Amboy on Saturdays, and in this space I will be offering group guitar classes!

There are approximately a billion reasons why group classes are amazing.  I will list the two main reasons here.

You’re not sure if your child is really interested in committing to music lessons / they’re cheaper.  If you’re unsure of how interested your child is in music lessons, a group class is the way to go.  Often, the first question asked after “can I have music lessons?” is “can we afford it?”  With group classes, you can.  Music classes are an excellent way to introduce your child to music lessons and give them a great music experience without spending what you may consider too much money.  After about a year or so, if your child is still interested in lessons and in fact, wants to dig deeper into the world of music, then you know that one-on-one lessons will be a sound investment in your child’s overall education.

We are social creatures. As someone who has been involved in music since the tender age of “I can’t quite remember how old I was when I started lessons” I can tell you that it’s hard to stay inside and practice when all your friends are outside playing.  But on the other hand, it’s easier to practice when you know your friends are also working on the same music.  This is basically my entire musical career summed up in two sentences.  In elementary school, I didn’t practice a lot at all (there were a lot of fights, tears, and yes, I actually quit at one point).  But once I got into high school and then college, and got involved in musicals, chorus, band and other ensembles, I started to work more, both on the music for my groups and on my piano and guitar playing. When I started to work towards that common goal of performing with my friends, I worked a lot harder, and had a lot more fun.  I honestly wish I had the experience of more group music classes when I was a kid, and that’s part of the reason why I’m so excited to start sharing them with you and your families!

So what classes are being offered?

coming soonFirst, there’s Beginner Guitar.  This class will be offered to all students ages 7 to 13 with less than a year’s worth of experience on the guitar.  Older students who would like to start guitar will spend as much time as necessary in this class and, when they are deemed ready, will be switched to the Intermediate Teen class, especially if they are ready to switch before the school year is over.  This class will be from 11:45 – 12:25 on Saturdays.

Intermediate Elementary is for students in 3rd through 6th grades who have more than one year’s experience playing guitar.  In this class we will expand on music theory  basics and note reading.  We will also work on playing simple melodies together as a group.  This class will be from 12:30 – 1:10 on Saturdays.

Intermediate Teen is for students from 7th grade through high school with more than one year’s experience playing the guitar.  In the teen class, we will work on theory, ensemble playing, chords and basic strumming patterns.  Students will be encouraged to suggest songs they would like to learn to play.  This class will be from 1:20 – 2:00.

Pricing, Location, and other details

Tuition for each class is $20 per month.  Payment must be remitted at the beginning of the month and is not refundable.  Due to the group nature of classes, they can not be made up, so students are encouraged to make every single meeting of the class.

Each class needs a minimum of 4 students enrolled – if you’re interested in joining, why not also ask a friend to join with you!

Classes will be held at an elementary school in Perth Amboy.  Due to the nature of our situation (we only rent the space one day a week, and also, it’s a school) and to deter random people from showing up when we’re not there, the exact location for classes will be emailed to students when they confirm their enrollment.

Finally – all students must sign up before September 17 and also space is limited!  Be sure to sign up if you know you want to join us.
